Dissenesis

Composer

09/2023 - 06/2024

"Dissenesis" was a collaborative project with Carla Costeira for her graduation concert at the Prince Claus Conservatorium in Groningen in June 2024. This two-movement piece, performed as part of her successful graduation and research project and later released as a two-part music video, explores the tension between tradition and modernity through music and visual art.

The first movement, "Dissension," portrays the conflict between these opposing forces, with the saxophone symbolizing tradition and electronics representing modernity. Throughout the movement, these elements engage in a sonic struggle, ultimately leading to modernity's triumph. To visually enhance this narrative, we collaborated with Secil Kurtulus, who designed compelling visuals for the project.

The second movement, "Anamnesis," serves as a memorial to lost traditions. Here, the saxophone is joined by a string quartet (Violin 1: Vukica Rasovic, Violin 2: Csenge Pozsonyi, Viola: Andreia Florindo, Cello: Belen De La Sagra Lafuente) in a more classical composition, further emphasizing the thematic contrast between the two movements. The performers played behind a large panel, with their shadows cast by a backlight, symbolizing that these traditions now exist only in memory. The minimalist visual design, featuring the performers' shadows, evoked a ghostly presence of traditions that have faded away.

The staging of "Dissenesis" was meticulously crafted to reflect its narrative. During "Dissension," visuals were projected onto the front of a large panel, with the saxophonist standing beside the panel and illuminated by a spotlight. This visual contrast reinforced the story of the struggle between tradition and modernity. Following this movement, the lighting shifted to a soft back projection for "Anamnesis," casting shadows of the musicians as they performed, creating a powerful image that underscored the idea that traditions now persist solely as memories.

This project not only explored the dynamic between tradition and modernity but also integrated visual elements to create an immersive, multidimensional performance. By contrasting modern compositional techniques with classical forms, "Dissenesis" captured the evolution of music and culture, with the unique staging adding depth to the thematic storytelling.
