Entangled Freedom

Composer / Sound Designer

06/2024

"Entangled Freedom" was a graduation theater performance by Rebeka Nemeth, successfully presented as part of the HKU Exposure in June 2024. Funded by HKU and Theater Kikker, the public performance took place in a glass container in Jakobstraat, Utrecht. The narrative centers on two individuals who encounter each other within the glass container—a symbol for various situations, ideologies, or life frameworks. Together, they engage in repetitive routines to fulfill their responsibilities within this confined space. As frustration mounts in one of them, a decision is made to leave the container, and eventually, both characters break free from its constraints.

As the music composer and sound designer for this performance, my role was to complement the minimalist and repetitive nature of the actors' movements. The performance was devoid of dialogue, relying solely on body language and gestures to convey its message, which positioned sound and music as central to shaping the audience's emotional experience.

In creating the sound design, I focused on the physical elements present on stage, such as sand and water. I recorded these sounds directly on set and integrated them into the soundscape, allowing the environment itself to influence the auditory experience. For each scene, I composed music that closely reflected the visuals—evoking a sense of peace or introducing irritation as tension escalated. By mirroring the rhythm and flow of the actors' slow, deliberate actions, the sound design and music enhanced the meditative and, at times, unsettling nature of the performance.

Repetition was a key element in the use of music and sound throughout most of the performance, creating an immersive atmosphere that paralleled the actors' routine-like movements. Silence was employed sparingly and strategically, appearing only once to break the cycle and draw the audience's full attention. This contrast heightened the emotional impact, marking a pivotal shift in the narrative.

Collaborating with such a flexible and open-minded director was an immensely rewarding experience. Together, we crafted a performance that thrived on the interplay between movement and sound, bringing the story to life within the confines of the glass container.
