"Niemand is een Eiland" is a short film directed by Doris Schillings, focusing on Nynthe, a character who, while bedridden, reflects on the cherished memories of her past. This film, with its delicate exploration of memory and reality, required an emotionally resonant soundscape to effectively support its narrative.

As the music composer and sound designer for the film, my goal was to reflect the emotional transitions between Nynthe’s present state and her memories. For the scenes where Nynthe lies in bed, I created a simple yet evocative soundscape using a blend of guitar and synth. These instruments were chosen to evoke a dreamy, almost timeless sensation, capturing the fragility of her condition and the blurred line between reality and her thoughts.

In contrast, the memory sequences were accompanied by soft, nostalgic piano tones, designed to evoke warmth and comfort, reflecting the positive emotions tied to her past. As each memory sequence concluded, I gradually reintroduced the guitar and synth, blending them with the piano to symbolize the transition from memory back to reality, ensuring a seamless emotional flow throughout the film.

In addition to composing the musical score, I worked extensively on the sound design. This involved thoroughly refining the recorded sounds from the set and adding ambient layers to enhance the overall smoothness of each scene. Special attention was given to the sound of a small radio, ensuring its output was authentic and reflective of its size. I carefully adjusted the radio's sound to make certain it felt natural and seamlessly integrated within the film's context.
